Hexham
is the centre of the largest, most sparsely populated district in
England. The main link
between the area and the rest of the country is provided by the
railway. There is a train roughly every half hour linking Hexham
to stations in Newcastle and Carlisle. There are also direct services
to places as far a-field as Glasgow, Ayr, Stranraer, Middlesborough,
Morpeth and Whitehaven.
Via bus, there are hourly services to Carlisle and half hourly services
to the Metro Centre and Newcastle. Twice daily services run to Alston.
Summer services to Keswick, Hadrian's Wall and Kielder are also
popular.
Beyond the Tyne Valley, local buses provide vital links with the
town's rural hinterland. Bellingham and Allendale have about seven
buses a day - including late night runs on Fridays and Saturdays.
On Tuesdays, market day, virtually the whole district is linked
to Hexham by bus.
