Stargazers focus on Kielder
KIELDER'S night sky, the darkest in England, will be the focus
of Britain's stargazers this weekend at the opening of Europe's
newest observatory.
The timber-built structure, housed at Black Fell, will have two
telescopes of differing strengths, and is designed to educate
the public as well as undertake scientific research.
The site has been chosen for its low levels of light and air pollution,
minimising the risk of interference by artificial light.
The observatory will be run by Kielder Observatory Astronomical
Society, an amateur group who hope to draw new people to their
passion.
