Welcome to Hexham
Hexham
is a picturesque town, dominated by the magnificent Abbey founded
in 674 AD by Saint Wilfrid. A market town rich in history, Hexham
has developed in time around the abbey with a number of impressive
buildings.
The newly refurbished 14th century Old Gaol is the oldest purpose
built gaol in England and hosts the Border Library.
Nearby are the Moothall, the old Courthouse, and the impressive
Beaumont Street, home to the former Corn Exchange. These are places
that visitors should not miss.
Why not take a stroll in the beautiful historic Hexham parks, next
to the Abbey. The leafy Abbey Grounds, the gardens of Hexham House
and the Sele are all Grade II listed and provide wonderful floral
displays.
Pleasure grounds since the 18th century, a walk in the park will
certainly provide pleasure for visitors to the town.

offers a wide range of shops to suit all tastes.
From quality independents to high street names, there are a large
number of shops to choose from, including boutiques and beautiful
gift or antique shops to browse at leisure. There are new and second
hand bookshops where you may find that elusive edition, as well
as Robbs, one of the oldest department stores in
Northumberland. The local leisure centre in Wentworth Car Park also
hosts an antique fair on the second Tuesday of each month. To help
you find the shops you like, there is a detailed listing overleaf.
When you are ready to eat or drink there is a huge choice of charming
coffee shops, restaurants with mouthwatering menus, pubs, bars and
sandwich shops or takeaways. See overleaf to find out more.
